Punctuality – at the top of interview etiquette!


 
Preparing for an interview is key and punctuality should be at the top of the list.

Being punctual says a lot about a person.  It demonstrates that you are dependable, professional, serious and respectful of other people’s time.
 
Whether you are commuting by public transit or driving to your interview, you should always research the location in order to be aware of the distance and surroundings. Have you heard of Google Maps? Awesome! This will also enable you to obtain concise directions as well as an estimation of the approximate time that it will take to reach your destination.
 
Some people choose to give themselves a considerable amount of time in order to get to their destination, especially when they are unfamiliar with the area that they are heading out to.  And depending on the time of day you must also factor in the volume of traffic. That being said, if you arrive 30 minutes ahead then it would be best to wait in your car or at a coffee shop close by. It is important to respect the time of your interview, and you should not arrive more than 10 minutes prior to the time that was confirmed. 
 
Arriving to your interview one hour ahead with coffee in hand and your significant other in tow doesn't set a good impression; after all you are not coming to a walk-in clinic.
 
Another important detail to bring with you when heading off to your interview is the recruiter’s coordinates.  Should you be running late due to unforeseen circumstances it is imperative that you contact the recruiter to apologize, inform them of the situation and confirm an estimated time of your arrival.
 
In order to accommodate candidates, recruiters will often schedule interviews outside of core business hours.  In which case it is just as important that you arrive on time when someone has gone out of their way to make things a little easier for you.
